Winter on the farm

A season of quiet magic
Winter settles over Little Tail Farms in its own gentle way. The pastures soften, the hills turn a deeper shade of gold, and everything moves with a slower breath. The animals feel it too. Our Highland cattle tuck into their hay with steady patience, steam rising in little clouds as they graze. The goats keep close to one another, a cozy cluster in the barn doorway, watching the morning unfold.

Rhythm shifts when the days get shorter. Instead of the hustle of summer chores, winter brings a quieter kind of work. We check water troughs, refresh bedding, and stack feed, all while listening to that crisp winter silence that hangs in the air like a blanket. The land rests and we follow its lead.

There’s a beauty in the small things this time of year. Frost clings to the fence rails at sunrise. Footprints weave across dew crusted paths where the donkeys wandered before breakfast. Evenings fall early and call everyone toward the warm glow of the barn lights. It’s simple and steady, the kind of season that invites you to linger.

And then there are the winter stars. With the trees bare and the air sharp and clear, the night sky opens wide above the farm. The constellations feel close enough to touch, hanging over the quiet barns like lanterns. You can stand at the fence line and hear nothing but your own breath and the soft shuffle of cattle settling in for the night. It’s a kind of stillness you only find in winter, a reminder that the world keeps its own quiet wonders.

Winter is also when we dream a little. We plan spring babies, new projects, and fresh spaces for our guests to gather. While the fields sleep, ideas take root. It’s one of the quiet joys of farm life, watching the future form in these restful months.
That’s winter at Little Tail Farms, tucked away and made for memory.
